We are pleased to invite you to apply for the Class of 2017 GEAR UP Educational Award. The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor GEAR UP mission is to provide quality pre-college programming that is responsive and tailored to the needs, character, and desires of our futurez, families, staff and school communities. We understand the significance of higher education and try to support GEAR UP futurez in their pursuit of post-secondary education.

The U.S. Department of Education, Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor fund the GEAR UP program and award.

Application Instructions:

  1. Request Letter of Recommendation (file name should be “Student Last Name, Student First Name-Recommendation”)
  2. Gather application materials (digitally)
  3. Start Student Information Form (below) and upload application materials

Please complete and return the attached application and documentation to apply for the Class of 2017 GEAR UP Scholarship. All information must be submitted byFriday, March 24th at 5:00PM. Late and/or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Up to 50 Class of 2017 GEAR UP Educational Awards will be granted.

  • This is an educational award meaning it will cover a portion of unmet need after all of the following have been applied to a student’s financial aid packet.

Order of Scholarship awarded to a GEAR UP Student:

    1. Federal Pell Grant
    2. Other public and private grants, scholarships, or tuition discounts
    3. GEAR UP Educational Award
    4. Other financial assistance (federal and private loans, work study)

Students must have a completed Federal Application for Free Student Aid (FAFSA).

The selection process for the “Class of 2017 GEAR UP Educational Award” will be based on the following:

  • Strength of the Application Essay
  • Grade Point Average
  • GEAR UP Participation
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • ACT/SAT Score
  • Community Service
  • Extracurricular Involvement
  • Work Experience

The following documents need to be submitted for a completed application:

  • (1) Letter of Recommendation emailed to Tenisha Jones at Must be received by Friday, March 24th at 5:00PM

Documents to be uploaded to the website:

  • Transcripts (From freshman year until 1st semester of senior year final grades)
  • ACT/SAT Score
  • Essay
  • Student Information Sheet Form
  • Resume that includes the following:
    • Work Experience
    • Community Service
    • Extracurricular Involvement

Students must update their information (school choice, address, phone number, e-mail address, etc.) with GEAR UP ( or if any of their information changes.

Essay Criteria

250-300 words. Must be typed, double-spaced, 12 point font

Essay Question
Discuss the following:
The importance of a college education to you.
What role GEAR UP played in preparing you for college? In the event, you did not have the opportunity to participate in any GEAR UP activities, how do you think pre-college programs can prepare you for college.

Include any GEAR UP programming that you may have participated in from 7th-12th grade.
Stick to the word limit.
If you never had the opportunity to participate in a pre-college program, please research the topic before completing the essay.
Have someone proofread your essay before submission.
If you do not have access to a computer at home or school please visit your local library or community resource.
Try your best!
