In this Academy, futurez participate in workshops to prepare them for standardized tests and the college application process. Futurez benefit from small group attention in this space; their intellect is affirmed and they are cared for, supported and encouraged. As college student leaders, sharing your college journey trains the futurez to push beyond their limits.
We coordinate with our partner schools to deliver a gamut of workshops in the classroom. In this way we are able to reach 80-100% of our cohort on a regular basis, creating significant bonds between futurez, GEAR UP staff and college student leaders.
Workshops range from what to expect in college, time management, developing study skills, relationship building, how to handle transitions and other topics pertinent to student success.
GEAR UP provides a free weeklong summer enrichment camp for Futurez attending our partner schools. Futurez get the opportunity to live in University of Michigan residence halls and attend workshops in actual college classrooms. Workshops are focused on such areas as enhancing reading and writing skills, time management, and creating community change.

Summer College Tour
This is where it all makes sense.
Futurez get the opportunity to travel and visit colleges outside of Michigan.
As a college student take this opportunity to travel, learn new things, visit new places, and gain a deeper knowledge of self, all while having a great time! College tours are important in helping students decide the right fit for them.
Campus visits are a unique part of GEAR UP’s programming. Oftentimes, it is the futurez first experience on a college campus and they begin to understand the value of pursuing postsecondary education.
Throughout the workshops and other campus activities, futurez are accompanied by GEAR UP student leaders – University of Michigan students who facilitated, provided guidance and clarity regarding inquiries about college, and most importantly, ensure that the futurez have a fun experience while on campus!
Students take field trips related to the college-going process (financial aid, etc) and cultural enrichment (Black Celebratory at the University of Michigan, the annual U-M MLK Symposium, Jim Crow Museum at Ferris State University, and others).
