My name is Dillon Martin-Sunyung Kim Sanchez, I’m a class of 2016 senior studying sociology and political science, currently conducting an honors thesis in sociology and applying to doctoral programs in sociology. Being part of OAMI and GEAR UP in the past 3 years has truly helped me reach my fullest potential. Although from Ann Arbor, coming to U of M was a huge transition for me, having a community of mentors and peers that I could relate to and work with made the biggest difference. Not only was OAMI a welcoming space, it was an office that helped me develop professionally, academically, and personally.
I know that the service and leadership opportunities that were afforded to me through GEAR UP have made me the person I am today.
Coming in as a freshmen in the Leaders and Best program I was introduced to GEAR UP, and have participated as a student leader every semester I have been able to. This past summer I was able to take part in two exciting summer programs: the GEAR UP college tour and the inaugural Warrior Scholar Boot Camp. In the past academic years and summer interims I have worked with GEAR UP staff as a student leader helping with the evaluation process of the program, as well as serving as an assistant to Lumas J. Helaire Ph.D. OAMI gave me a very special and rewarding college experience, one that I would not have another way.
