The theme of (R)Evolution invokes a spirit of fighting for change and change within the fight. History has shown that when there is energy in a movement to reconstruct an aspect of our culture, that movement brings forth new energy. We become aware of the kaleidoscope of ways to grow and improve ourselves and our society. Hopefully, the viewer will see themselves and their fight for change in this artwork.

John Rodriguez is the Strategic Communications Manager in the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) and has been a member of the University of Michigan community since 2014. He is of Afro-Caribbean descent, having been born in the U.S. Virgin Islands. John holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). His work as a visual artist explores the dynamics of culture and emotions through portraiture while aiming to tell stories that build community awareness and challenge stereotypical narratives.
