JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER ORCHESTRA WITH WYNTON MARSALIS
KENNETH KIESLER, conductor
Wynton Marsalis and his Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra will be joined by orchestral musicians from the U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance for a performance of Marsalis’s Symphony No. 4 (“The Jungle”), inspired by the excitement and chaos of New York City. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. famously stated that “the record of history is the record of the struggle between the forces of good and evil.” In his later years, King’s mission moved into the “jungles” of America’s great cities—from Chicago to New York—where he confronted the “paradox of poverty in the midst of plenty.” Wynton Marsalis’s Symphony No. 4, “The Jungle,” is a musical investigation of this very paradox.
