As we annually celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we do so this year in the context of a ban on affirmative action and recent attacks on its successor (diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI). Some even argue that Dr. King would be opposed to these interventions. David Luke argues that affirmative action and DEI are outgrowths of the Civil Rights Movement and consistent with the desires of Dr. King; while they are not perfect nor are they sufficient, they are tools consistent with Dr. King's fight against racism and systemic oppression.
